Senior Estimator

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented steel projects estimator to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional with proven experience estimating steel projects. The successful candidate will play a critical role in accurately forecasting project costs and ensuring competitive, profitable, and successful project execution.
Summary
The Estimator assesses the costs, resources, and time required for specific projects. They analyze project requirements, gather data, and use estimation techniques to determine the likely expenses and duration of the project, contributing to informed decision-making and successful project execution. In short, the Estimator is responsible for the day to day preparation of estimates and proposals.
Responsibilities
- Review complete tender packages including drawings, specs, and addenda.
- Perform project take-offs
- Calculate labour estimates
- Obtain material pricing (via our internal purchasing department or by negotiating direct with suppliers)
- Obtain subcontractor pricing (Paint, galvanizing, NDE, etc.)
- Have pertinent portions of the tender package reviewed by the quality department, the legal department, our insurance provider, and other parties as necessary.
- Obtain man-hours for drafting that will be done in-house from the drafting manager.
- Obtain price from drafting subcontractors as necessary.
- Prepare and submit lead letters when appropriate.
- Prepare and submit proposals/quotes.
- Responsible to follow up on bids and obtain information to help us improve our bidding in the future. Make sure to put any information obtained in the notes field in the estimating database.
- Prepare estimates for project managers when requested.
- Participate in weekly estimating meeting. Be prepared to report on the status of the estimates in progress, estimates waiting for response and estimates we won or lost.
- Maintain an up to date electronic estimate file on the network for each estimate under your responsibility.
- Review contracts or purchase orders for agreement with our proposal prior to accepting an award.
- Prepare the Contract Review and Profile form and Tender Review form when successful on a bid.
- Assemble pertinent information packages to be turned over to relevant project management staff.
- Responsible for promoting, maintaining, and championing safety in the organization.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A minimum of five years (5 years) experience in estimation/project management in the construction industry (preference given to those with experience in custom steel//bridges//structural work)
- Undergraduate degree in engineering or post-secondary diploma in a construction related discipline is considered an asset.
- General civil construction knowledge; understanding of plans, specifications, methods and procedures.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take off procedures, sub-trade procurement, pricing and bid closing procedures.
- Proven ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
