Fender System (FDR DRIVE)
For the repaving of FDR Drive in Manhattan New York, a temporary bridge was required in the East River to divert traffic. In order to protect this temporary bridge, a protection device known as the “Fendering System” was deployed directly beside the structure. Designed to act as a bumper for any ships travelling the river that lost power, the bumper actually prevented ships from hitting the temporary bridge. Over 3,000 feet long and 10 feet in diameter, this completed item consisted of 3,500 tons of fabricated plate work.
